I am a Superstar!
YOUR CHILD IS A SUPERSTAR! The Superstar program is the tool I use to help promote and reward on-task, helpful, courteous, etc. behavior. The superstar program is very easy to use and manage. Here is how it works: Every child begins his/her day with their individual name magnet on GOOD. If I see behavior that is exceptional, then I ask the child to move the name magnet to TERRIFIC. The student can move up to MARVELOUS when I see remarkable kindergarten performance. Sometimes children’s behavior in the kindergarten classroom needs help refocusing. When this happens, I will tell the child or children the behavior that needs to stop. I will tell them, “This is your first warning. The next time I need to talk to you about something, you will have to move your magnet down to WARNING.” If I do need to talk to a child about behavior any time after the first warning, then I have the child move his/her stick to WARNING. TIME – OUT is used if I need to remind the student of behavior again and CALL HOME is used when the teacher has given the child many chances and the child continues unacceptable classroom behavior that is interfering with the learning of his/herself and others in the room. Whoever is on GOOD, TERRIFIC, or MARVELOUS at the end of class will earn 1, 2, or 3 superstars, respectively. If a child’s name remain on WARNING, TIME –OUT, or CALL HOME, then no superstar is given. The student does have an opportunity to move his/her name magnet back to GOOD if I see that an improvement has been made.
When do students move their sticks up to TERRIFIC? It depends. Sometimes I have children move their magnet when I catch them quietly looking at a book, when they have walked quietly in the hallway, or when another teacher has complimented them. Other times, it can be because they were kind to a friend, have done excellent work, or have been an active listener. EVERY CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE TO TERRIFIC OR MARVELOUS ON ANY GIVEN DAY!
What happens with all of the superstars that your child earns? Approximately once a month, we will exchange our superstars in for money! YES, MONEY! Every superstar is worth 1 penny. The money that your child earns can be spent to purchase items in our Kindergarten Store. We have items like stickers, tiny animals, bouncy balls, tattoos, pencils, etc. for purchase in our store. I will ask parents to volunteer to help run our store. I have found that our store and the superstar program helps children learn to count money, make decisions, and learn responsibility.
Where are the superstars kept? I will give each child a plastic baggie with his/her name on it. The superstars need to be kept in the baggie. I also ask that the baggie remain in the folder or the backpack at all times. Keeping the superstars inside of the backpack will ensure that when we do a superstar exchange, everyone in the classroom will have them available.
What happens if the superstars are lost? I will be very sad and sorry because I can not replace them. The superstar program also helps to teach our youngster’s responsibility. Kindergartners CAN do this!
Our classroom has rules to keep us safe and happy kindergartners. The students will also tell me rules that they believe need to be a part of our room. The general rules in the classroom are as follows:
1. Be active listeners.
2. Listen to the teacher or the classmate who is talking. Everyone will have a turn to share.
3. Walk in school.
4. Use inside voices.
5. Never hurt anyone on the inside or the outside. Never hurt anyone’s feelings or body.
6. Use good manners.
7. Be a good friend to everyone.
I appreciate your understanding and support with this Superstar program. When we work together at school and at
home, everyone succeeds!
